I have heard good things about the Gold Lion sound but not the reliability. Has anyone here heard or used both? I am leaning toward the JJ as I suspect the law of diminishing returns will come into play.
More options. JonSnell Electronic Member. GB www. Bias is different! A 6L6 is a Pentode with similar pin outs. It depends on the amplifier. I have both and the lions sound better in one amp and the JJ's in another.
Probably has to do with the bias. If you bias your amplifier specifically for the JJ's they will probably sound just as good if not better. JonSnell Electronic said:. Click to expand Eli Duttman Member. All of JJ's Octal production is, at best, highly inconsistent.
Outright garbage has been marketed in North America. I strongly suggest that "reissue" Gold Lion tubes sourced from a vendor known to do things correctly be purchased. IMO, this is not a time to "cheap out". Last edited: pm. Eli Duttman said:. AquaTarkus Member. EL34 is a true pentode with similar pinout. AquaTarkus said:. KT 77s are beam not bean LoL tetrodes, cleverly designed to have characteristics very similar to EL34s, and have often been used as drop-in replacements. Of course, bias should be adjusted.
Likewise s are also beam tetrodes designed to mimic EL84s. Sent from my phone. Please excuse any typpos. Bandersnatch Member. Richidoo Member. Both were unreliable, either noisy, or internal short that damaged my amps on two occasions. Twice because the GT E34Ls were the best sounding tube of this type I've ever heard, so whenever they blew up I replaced them over and over, but the whole batch was bad so I gave up on them. Maybe now, 10 years later they are good again? I will never buy a JJ tube again.

Maybe now, 10 years later they are good again? I will never buy a JJ tube again. Even 12AT7 gold pin JJs were noisy. Every JJ tube I've had had problems. Now I only buy Black Treasure or New Sensor tubes because they are reliable, and life is too short for broken tube amps. I use Gold Lion KT88s now, they sound awesome.
I had one shorted with a clinking sound inside it, but my excellent tube vendor Jim McShane took care of me under warranty. Hi, I use JJs all the time and have never had a problem. Everything from ECC82s to Kt88s. I have had problems with EH, Psavne and Tungsol. Shef Member. Richidoo said:. Last edited: am. Pin 1 is not connected to the tube NC.
The Suppressor Grid is connected to Pin 1. These are the only Popular Power Tubes that I am aware of that have the suppressor grid brought out to a separate pin. You may find others. The same pinout does not necessarily make the tubes the same. Watch the maximum ratings of the tubes. Set your bias accordingly. I do use them conservatively. The filaments range from 0. Know all about your amplifier before you tube roll. Bandersnatch said:. All the 's and A I have had all had three sets of grid posts, and the suppressor grid wound around the outboard set.

I don't know about you guys, but I have already two sets of JJ KT77, that dying in my Diezel Herbert, first set that eventually I got replaced under warranty started to make troubles after 6 mouths: one of tubes starters to glow almost like a light bulb, second set started to do the same thing after year.
I hope they will work longer than JJKT77, because it's quite frustrating and expensive to retube Herbert every year. Last edited: May 26, Messages 1, Perhaps you are just killing the tubes even assuming 65mA is for 2 tubes combines, so 32,5 per tube. Gallery Silver Supporting Member. Messages 8, I dunno but that video comparison sure makes me think the Genelex is money well spent. Messages 2, I love the sound of KT77s. Probably hours on it so far and they are still going strong. But, I'm pretty sure I'm biasing them at 35mA per tube.
Running a 65mA bias current is over the top for a 25W tube, and would seriously affect tube life. Belensky said:. Click to expand GCKelloch Member. The GL's sound more sloppy and resonant. Maybe they just break up sooner, but most Russian tubes tend to get muddy when driven. Maybe better for a bluesy sound, but not really for Metal.
I"ve heard of this KT77 issue with Deizel amps b4. I wonder if it has to do with the tube sockets being configured to use the grid to moderate the raw bias current? You might have to use the GL with that amp. You could try some EL34L, but they can sound too stiff. Might be good mixing with the GL KT77 if the pairs can be biased independantly. GCKelloch said:. Humble Texan Fan Member. Messages 7, GL and JJ are like night and day, really.
JJs aren't nearly as middy bright, almost glassy sounding, like the originals. GLs are more vivid as well, I think. Diezel in fact recommends the JJ KT77, but that doesn't mean they know the specified k grid leak limit of the tubes. Most of them may last a while depending on how hard they are pushed. They may have made a grid leak resistance change in more recent models.
It's worth finding out, and altering it to a max of k if you can. The tubes may then last years.
KT77 is a beam power pentode with octal base. It can be used in most EL34 amplifiers. It has more power, fatter bass and more headroom than the EL34 and. The JJ KT77 is an alternative to the common EL34 tube. From our review: "Overall a nice balance of tone in bass, midrange and treble. KT77 JJ Electronic. JJ - Electronic s.r.o..
